The luteal phase, also known as the secretory or postovulatory phase, occurs after ovulation, that is, once the egg is released from the ovary. This stage lasts until the end of the menstrual cycle. After the release of the egg, the follicle closes and the corpus luteum is formed. This body will secrete estrogens and progesterone. In addition, the corpus luteum will last until a pregnancy occurs or a new cycle begins with the arrival of menstruation. On the other hand, at this stage of the menstrual cycle, the concentrations of luteinizing hormones (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) are reduced.
